Jammu, 25 July: Lashing out at the PDD for giving huge electricity bills to the people in Jammu and Kashmir after installation of smart meters, Aam Aadmi Party’s Jammu state vice-president Amit Kapoor said that his party’s ongoing agitation against this will continue. Against this, Aam Aadmi Party workers protested strongly outside Hari Singh Park even today.
The protesters were raising anti-government and anti-PDD slogans during this period. Addressing the protestors on the occasion, Amit Kapoor said that the people of our state are from middle class and below poverty line families and they cannot afford this system. He said that this electricity is generated on our rivers. Government is sending it to outside states and people of Jammu are being given electricity by paying huge money which is not acceptable to them at any cost.
He said how poor people can pay the bill of Rs 3,000-4,000 for smart meters. He alleged that the government was hell-bent on killing poor people and was now looting people by sending them huge electricity bills. He said that people cannot afford the cost of smart meter billing. Their income is very modest as most of the people in our area are either working as salesmen, auto-rickshaw drivers or roadside vendors. They can hardly manage the school fees of their children. Amit Kapoor said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have the first right on the electricity generated in the state.
Amit Kapoor alleged that the government is sucking the blood of poor people across Jammu and Kashmir by installing smart meters and paying huge electricity bills. Demanding free electricity and drinking water to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, he urged the LG administration to resolve the issue on priority basis. They said they wanted flat rates and not smart meter generated electricity bills. He said that despite the huge amount of power resources in the State, the people were suffering. This is our electricity and we have the first right on it. He said that the Aam Aadmi Party will further intensify its agitation against it in the coming days.
He said that protests are taking place everywhere but the government is not ready to solve the problems of the people. He said that the government is putting financial burden on the people by installing prepaid smart meters and through prepaid bills, against which there is a lot of anger among the people and people are continuously protesting against this decision of the government by taking to the streets. He said that the government had promised to build a smart city, but now by installing smart meters, the government is unnecessarily troubling the people and putting financial burden on the people.
He said that already the ever increasing inflation in the country has broken the back of the common people and now people are being harmed by installing smart meters by the government. He demanded from the Lieutenant Governor that if the government does not solve this problem of the people soon, then a massive agitation will be started in the coming days.
